Built on the trail, not behind a desk
A wayfarer is someone who travels on foot as an act of discovery, for whom walking is the destination: the end in itself.
That’s exactly how Wayfarer Walking Holidays began, with one life-changing journey on foot.
I’m Brittany and for me, Hadrian’s Wall has always been more than a trail. It is a place of deep meaning, discovery, connection, and return. I first encountered Hadrian’s Wall while studying Latin at university. When I discovered it had recently become a National Trail, I was determined to walk it one day.
The moment came 15 years later, during a deeply difficult period in my life. I set out on the Path with no plans or expectations other than to show myself I could move forward. And in the slow way that long-distance walking demands, I did. The presence of thousands of footsteps gone before me in an ancient and ever-changing landscape revealed I was part of something much larger than myself, moving not just through a place but through time and story, too.
What began as a walk became something much richer: an experience shaped by the connections created when moving through a landscape on foot.
Since that first walk, I have returned to Hadrian’s Wall every year, but it is the memory of that first journey that gives Wayfarer its heart. Our itineraries are designed not just to help people walk Hadrian’s Wall, but to experience the people, places, and stories that give it life today.
We are a small, two-person, local company born from our lived experience, repeated journeys, and deep love of the trail. We live and work in the landscapes you’ll walk through. We personally walk all our routes, stay at the accommodation we recommend, and know the Path like our own front garden. We also work closely with other independent partners and services along the Wall because we believe walking holidays should support and benefit the communities they pass through.
Our goal is simple: help you experience Hadrian’s Wall Country, not simply walk through it.
Because Hadrian’s Wall is more than a monument. It is a layered landscape of history and human experience: ancient, present, and personal.
