Hadrian’s Hideaways Daily Itinerary

Your own luxury outdoor adventure filled with epic landscapes, unforgettable stays, and nights spent beneath the stars.

Start

Arrive in Bowness-on-Solway, where Hadrian’s Wall once met the sea. As the sun sets over the Solway Firth, settle into your first hideaway, relaxing in the peace of birdsong and expansive coastal views. Tomorrow, your adventure across one of Britain's most iconic landscapes begins.

Day 1

Bowness-on-Solway to Carlisle (14 miles)

Follow the trail east through the coast and countryside of Cumbria, passing quiet villages, rolling farmland, and the first traces of Rome's northern frontier. This section offers a gentler introduction to Hadrian's Wall Country, allowing you to find your pace while enjoying the views. Your day ends at a unique countryside retreat where you might spend your evening soaking tired legs and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Day 2

Carlisle to Walton (11 miles)

Leave Carlisle behind and continue along the River Eden through flower-scented meadows, into ancient woodlands, lush river gorges, and rolling countryside. The sense of space and solitude provides a day of unhurried walking leading to tonight’s hideaway, where you might toast the day’s walk around your campfire or relax in a hot tub under the stars before heading into more dramatic country tomorrow.

Day 3

Walton to Once Brewed (15 miles)

Journey into the heart of Hadrian’s Wall Country today, accompanied by some of the most iconic scenery on the trail. Cumbrian countryside dotted with ancient and medieval ruins gradually gives way to the remote, romantic crags of Northumberland and the highest point on the Wall. As darkness falls, take time to soak in the magic of this wild place from this evening’s carefully selected hideaway. Depending on availability, your accommodation may range from a luxury secluded cabin to a historic castle stay.

Day 4

Once Brewed to Chollerford (13 miles)

Ancient remains, sweeping views, and rugged cliff-top walking make this one of the most memorable days on the trail. Follow the Wall as it snakes along the dramatic Whin Sill Escarpment, past the remarkable remains of Housesteads and Brocolitia, into the open Northumbrian moorlands, knowing a cosy retreat and a well-deserved fireside sip await at the end of today’s walk.

Day 5

Chollerford to Heddon-on-the-Wall (15 miles)

Follow the Wall through the undulating pastureland of Northumberland, past quiet villages and panoramic views into the quieter countryside that used to support the Roman frontier. As the land settles so does your pace, relaxing as changing scenery leads to another memorable stay combining rural charm with modern comforts.

Day 6

Heddon-on-the-Wall to Wallsend (15 miles)

Wind along lush riverside paths into the urban landscapes that define the eastern edge of the ancient frontier, tracing the last miles of this incredible coast to coast journey past modern bridges and architecture, shops and cafes, to journey’s end at Segedunum Roman Fort. Tonight, you’ll reflect on your experience and toast your achievement in style at your final luxurious stay.

Finish

Depart Newcastle after breakfast. Those with time to spare might like to enjoy the independent shops, historic streets, and cultural sights of the city.

About Hadrian’s
Wall Path

A journey across England’s most iconic long-distance trail, where ancient history, unspoiled landscapes, and welcoming communities meet.

Steeped in ancient history and set against the dramatic landscapes of northern England, Hadrian’s Wall is one of the country’s most iconic National Trails. Following the line of the Roman frontier, the trail offers the rare opportunity to walk through an ancient landscape shaped by nearly 2000 years of human story.

Across rolling countryside, rugged crags, quiet farmland, and open moorland, the trail unfolds on a journey that is both physical and reflective. Some sections are bold and dramatic, others gentle and peaceful, each revealing a different side to the Wall, rich in history and atmosphere.

Hadrian’s Wall is not just a monument, but a living landscape shaped by the people who have walked it, lived alongside it, and continue to care for it today. Along the way, welcoming communities offer rest, warmth, and connection, giving rhythm to the journey.

This is a place best experienced on foot, with the insight of those who know it well. We design our walking itineraries so you can experience the Wall like a local–moving beyond the guidebook to discover the places, people, and details that bring the landscape to life. Each itinerary balances challenge and enjoyment, structure and freedom, so you can focus less on logistics and more on the experience of walking itself.

Every journey along Hadrian’s Wall is different, yet shaped by the same heart: a walk through history and landscape, where each step adds your own story to the trail.
