From Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend: A journey made for immersion in land, heart, & story
This thoughtfully paced journey traces the line of the Roman frontier from coast to city over 8 walking days, balancing rewarding daily distances with time to enjoy the history, landscapes, and atmosphere of the trail.
Beginning on the quiet Solway coast in Bowness-on-Solway, your journey unfolds eastward through classic English landscape and ancient Roman frontier, before finishing at Segedunum in Wallsend.
What makes this itinerary special is the extra time built into the Wall’s most scenic and historically rich central section, allowing you to experience the heart of Hadrian’s Wall Country at a gentler pace while also taking time to explore key Roman sites such as Vindolanda and Housesteads in greater depth without adding a full rest day.
We’ve designed this route from West to East, beginning in the peaceful expanse of the Solway coast and finishing on Newcastle’s historic riverside. This direction also allows for simpler onward travel at the end of the walk. If you’d prefer to walk in reverse, we’re happy to arrange an East to West version.

Start
Arrive in Bowness-on-Solway, where your first night’s accommodation will be booked (subject to availability).
Day 1
Bowness-on-Solway to Carlisle (14 miles)
Begin on the peaceful shores of the Solway Firth, following quiet lanes and gently rolling countryside through Cumbrian villages to Carlisle, one of Roman Britain’s most important frontier cities.
Day 2
Carlisle to Walton area (10-14 miles)
Follow the River Eden eastward into gentle, undulating countryside dotted with picturesque villages, lush pastures, and subtle evidence of the Roman frontier.
Day 3
Walton area to Gilsland (7-11 miles)
Wind through lush river gorges, past ancient remains and your first glimpse of the Wall, into more dramatic upland landscapes as you approach Northumberland National Park, with flexible overnight options creating a more manageable stage.
Day 4
Gilsland area to Steel Rigg (6-8 miles)
This memorable day takes you into one of the most impressive stretches of the trail, with expansive views and a sense of anticipation as you ascend the highest point on the Wall at Green Slack, with time to explore the incredible remains and museum at Vindolanda, depending on your pace.
Day 5
Steel Rigg to Brocolitia (9 miles)
A shorter walking day has been purposefully designed to give you time to fully enjoy this unforgettable stretch of the trail, with extra space in the day to explore remarkable Roman sites such as Housesteads and the Temple of Mithras at Brocolitia in greater depth–experiences often missed on faster-paced itineraries.
Day 6
Brocolitia to Port Gate (9 miles)
Refreshed and reinvigorated, continue eastward, leaving the dramatic central crags behind as the landscape gradually softens through open moorland to rolling countryside. Depending on your pace, there may be time to divert off-trail on foot or by taxi to explore nearby Corbridge Roman Town.
Day 7
Port Gate to Heddon-on-the-Wall (10 miles)
A longer but gentle day takes you through a classic Northumberland mix of undulating farmlands, open pastures, and ancient woods, past traces of Roman earthworks and some of the last visible stretches of the Wall.

Your final day follows the River Tyne from the outskirts of Newcastle, through its vibrant quayside to Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend where Hadrian’s Wall reaches its end in a fitting and celebratory finish.

About Hadrian’s
Wall Path
A journey across England’s most iconic long-distance trail, where ancient history, unspoiled landscapes, and welcoming communities meet.
Steeped in ancient history and set against the dramatic landscapes of northern England, Hadrian’s Wall is one of the country’s most iconic National Trails. Following the line of the Roman frontier, the trail offers the rare opportunity to walk through an ancient landscape shaped by nearly 2000 years of human story.
Across rolling countryside, rugged crags, quiet farmland, and open moorland, the trail unfolds on a journey that is both physical and reflective. Some sections are bold and dramatic, others gentle and peaceful, each revealing a different side to the Wall, rich in history and atmosphere.
Hadrian’s Wall is not just a monument, but a living landscape shaped by the people who have walked it, lived alongside it, and continue to care for it today. Along the way, welcoming communities offer rest, warmth, and connection, giving rhythm to the journey.
This is a place best experienced on foot, with the insight of those who know it well. We design our walking itineraries so you can experience the Wall like a local–moving beyond the guidebook to discover the places, people, and details that bring the landscape to life. Each itinerary balances challenge and enjoyment, structure and freedom, so you can focus less on logistics and more on the experience of walking itself.
Every journey along Hadrian’s Wall is different, yet shaped by the same heart: a walk through history and landscape, where each step adds your own story to the trail.
